3LC Road Race Turbo Training
In the winter time, it’s good to get creative with your cycle training to avoid the seriously chilly weather and wet road conditions to match.
Regardless of your current skill level, a turbo trainer is a great way to help you improve your cycle (and general fitness) over the winter, and with an ever-competitive market these can be purchased relatively cheaply.
If you decide to invest in a turbo trainer, I would strongly recommend that you look into the 3LC video series to provide different challenges for you.
I have now tried 4 of the series of 6, and so far my favourite is the Road Race edition. Whether you are a sportive enthusiast, a triathlete, or just a weekend warrior who likes to hit the bike for pure recreation, the people at 3LC have come up with a great format that will keep you focused and pushed for the duration of the workout.
Highlights
Banter: the format is bare bones with 6 professional cyclists facing off to compete the workout from their on camera coaching staff. The banter between the cyclists adds a nice bit of fun to the workout, and the brevity is necessary when you get into some of the sections!
Grade ‘A’ advice: for a £9.99 download fee you get a room full of professional cyclists, 2 coaches providing instruction both for the workout as well as recovery, as well as colour commentary from Mark Cavendish himself. I like the fact that the video places Cavendish as one of the riders. He’s not participating, but they don’t overdo it on his screen-time or place him on a pedestal.
This is a steal at twice the price, and great for all abilities.
Clear formatting: perhaps the best feature of the 3LC format is that you have a clear understanding of the different stages of the workout. As per the screenshot provided, you know what you are doing, and you know what’s coming. This is very helpful because it allows you to maximise your efforts during the session, and not be surprised by unexpected changes in pace and/or intensity.
Areas for improvement
More detail: the only area that would be nice is a more detailed explanation of the rationale behind the different stages of the workout, as well as suggestions for hydration and/or recovery in terms of specific products. It would be great to hear from the pros how they recover after an intense turbo session, and it seems as though an opportunity may be missed to get insight from the pros that are being filmed.
Summary
Having said all of this, this is a great DVD to download and use for your winter training. Click below to purchase the DVD, and I’ve also included the link to my latest workout using the Road Race DVD. http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/632052577
